Decoding Gender-Based Violence to Understand the Problems and Identify the Solutions
A seminar titled "Decoding Gender-Based Violence: Understanding the Problem, Identifying the Solution," in observance of 16 days of activism campaign to end violence against women and girls was held on 24 November 2022. Young researchers from icddr,b presented key findings from The Lancet Series on Violence against women and girls. They informed that millions of women and girls worldwide experience violence which takes many forms, including intimate physical and sexual partner violence, child and forced marriage, sex trafficking, and rape. The Lancet series shows that such abuse is preventable. The second phase of the evidence-sharing session focused on the prevalence of violence and harassment among Bangladeshi adolescents, based on the Bangladesh Adolescent Health and Wellbeing 2019-20 undertaken by the National Institute of Population Research and Training (NIPORT) and supported by icddr,b. Senior Director of MCHD of icddr,b, Dr Shams El Arifeen gave the welcome address, and Dr Tahmeed Ahmed, Executive Director of icddr,b, delivered the opening remark and emphasised the importance of learning and showing respect to prevent gender-based violence. Through the “Know Better, Act Better” initiative, icddr,b has been celebrating evidence through a series of activities including sharing key facts on Gender-Based Violence through its social media platforms, publishing opinion pieces, arranging in-house gender workshops and creating awareness by arranging a theatrical play at icddr,b. The campaign is being undertaken by AdSEARCH by icddr,b funded by the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD) in collaboration with USAID’s Research for Decision Makers (RDM) Activity and Data for Impact (D4I).
