Research Advisory Group (RAG) meeting on SRHR of female garment workers was held

On 21 June 2023, the Research Advisory Group (RAG) commenced its second meeting for the research study titled ‘Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) of female garment workers living in three urban slums of Bangladesh’ under AdSEARCH by icddr,b. The primary objectives of the RAG meeting were to provide an update on the study progress and present the additional findings from round 1.


The meeting started with an opening speech by the study’s Principal Investigator Dr Ruchira Tabassum Naved, Emeritus scientist, icddr,b.


The meeting includes two presentations on two specific research findings. The first presentation, ‘Teenage Pregnancy Among Female Garment Workers: Magnitude, Decision-making, and Drivers’, was delivered by Dr Ruchira Tabassum Naved. She shared the study's findings concerning teenage pregnancy among garment workers, specifically focusing on the gaps between knowledge, aspirations, and actual practices.


The second presentation delved into the topic of "Prevalence and Correlates of Unintended Pregnancies Among Female Garment Workers in Bangladesh: A Quantitative Exploration." Co-presented by Sultan Mahmud and Dr Ruchira Tabassum Naved, this segment examined the impact of unintended pregnancies on the health, education, and overall well-being of individuals and society as a whole. A question-answer session was moderated by the Principal Investigator following the presentations.


The RAG meeting was graced by the presence of esteemed representatives from various organisations, the Directorate General of Family Planning (DGFP), BLAST, BRAC Institute of Governance, Fulki, and RMG activists. They expressed their opinion and feedback on the study findings.
