Unpacking Health Inequities through a Gender Lens in Bangladesh: An AdSEARCH findings

It will take 131 years to reach full gender parity, and even longer for countries like Bangladesh with the existing gender gap situation. In a seminar titled 'Unpacking Health Inequities through a Gender Lens in Bangladesh: An Analysis of the Current Landscape Based on National Surveys' experts have revealed alarming projections regarding gender parity in Bangladesh on 16 August 2023 at icddr,b's Sasakawa Auditorium. Nahida Akter, Gender Equality Specialist, Maternal and Child Health Division of icddr,b presented the keynote paper conducted by AdSEARCH by icddr,b. She presented emphasised the urgency to address the gender gap comprehensively, particularly in the context of health.


The event commenced with an opening speech by Dr Tahmeed Ahmed, the Executive Director of icddr,b. He said, “We must acknowledge, recognise and estimate women’s household and agricultural contribution as gender indicators to understand the gender gap better.”


The primary objective of the situation analysis was the situation analysis aims to identify gaps in gender equality focusing on key domains intersecting with gender and health and inform policy making. The analysis collated 68 indicators from ten national-level surveys for the period of 2010-2023.


The analysis drew data from a collection of 68 indicators extracted from ten national-level surveys conducted between the years 2010 and 2023. Following the comprehensive presentation, an interactive question-and-answer session engaged the audience.


Shams El Arifeen Senior Scientist and Senior Director of the Maternal and Child Health Division at icddr,b, concluded the seminar with his remarks, “Global estimates suggest we have closed the gender gap in youth literacy however, the gap in adult literacy between men and women may indicate that the existing programmes and policies might be failing to reduce the gender gap among adults.”
