Results from Nutri-CAP study presented at Executive Director’s Scientific Seminar

The Executive Director's Scientific Seminar, titled "Dietary Diversity of Adolescent Girls in an Urban Slum Area of Dhaka City: Results from the Nutri-CAP Study," occurred on 13 December 2023, at the icddr,b Sasakawa Auditorium. Fahmida Dil Farzana, Assistant Scientist in the Nutrition and Research Division, presented key findings from the Nutri-CAP study at the seminar.

Dr Md. Fazlul Kabir, Head of Clinical & Diagnostic Services, delivered the welcome address.

The presentation underscored a critical issue the lack of knowledge in selecting proper food items is contributing to the increasing burden of malnutrition among adolescent girls, especially in the challenging context of slum settlements.

The Nutri-CAP study revealed a significant improvement in hemoglobin levels. However, there hasn't been a corresponding improvement in the dietary diversity of adolescents.

The study also found that many families are currently facing difficulties affording various food items due to the recent surge in commodity prices. Escalating vegetable prices have resulted in a reduction in curry preparation, leading to decreased food intake compared to previous times.

Following the presentation, a question-and-answer session provided an opportunity for further discussion.

Nutri-CAP study is actively working towards developing a model for implementing sustainable nutrition service delivery platforms in slum settlements within Dhaka city funded by Global Affairs Canada through AdSEARCH by icddr,b under work package 5.
