Study Overview

Cervical cancer is a significant public health issue globally, particularly affecting low- and middle-income countries. It disproportionately affects women in developing countries, where access to preventive measures such as HPV vaccination and screening programs are limited. In Bangladesh, cervical cancer is evident with high mortality rates and second most common cancer in women. To address this issue, the GoB established a national cervical cancer register in 2018, aiming to collect and analyse data on cervical cancer cases and related risk factors, such as HPV prevalence, among women in the country. The data collected from the register helps to inform the development of evidence-based policies and strategies for the prevention and control of cervical cancer in Bangladesh. However, gaps like training inadequacy among healthcare professionals on data collection and management, lack of resources for maintaining the register, and difficulties in ensuring patient privacy and confidentiality persist in the implementation and functionality of the register in this hospital found from an informal discussion with the Head of the Department, Dept. of Obs. & Gynae & Gynaecological Oncology of DMCH. To address these issues, we are developing and implementing a comprehensive protocols and guidelines for data collection, storage, and analysis, as well as to provide ongoing training and support for healthcare staff. icddr,b in collaboration with DMCH and BSMMU aims to strengthen documentation through designing and developing a digitalised register on Cervical cancer at DMCH.
