Although marriage marks the beginning of a new chapter in life, for many women in Bangladesh that chapter begins amid control, pressure, and a lack of autonomy in decision-making. A longitudinal study by the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (icddr,b) found that within just six months of marriage, four out of five women experience controlling behavior from their husbands.
