Sixty-two percent of adolescent girls in the country had prior knowledge about menstruation. However, 86 percent reported that they did not receive adequate information on the subject. Eighty-eight percent learned about it from family members and 61 percent from friends. In contrast, only 11 percent gained information from books, and merely 5 percent learned from teachers or coaches.
These findings emerged from a study conducted by the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (icddr,b) among 100 female athletes aged 12–19 years at the Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protishthan (BKSP).
