Study Overview

About half of the Bangladeshi mothers have common mental health issues, causing preterm birth, poor mother-child bonding, and even infants' cognitive development. Most of the mental healthcare facilities are clustered around urban areas, while rural women do not have access to mental healthcare in Bangladesh.

Moreover, the stigma and misconception regarding mental illness exist, and there is a significant scarcity of awareness of mental health in Bangladeshi rural society. Since maternal mental distress among these rural mothers may cause adverse maternal and child health outcomes, appropriate interventions are needed to address maternal mental distress among the Bangladeshi maternal population.

To date, no implementation research has been to improve the mental health of mothers during the antepartum and postpartum period by minimising access to mental healthcare gaps and enhancing awareness among the mothers.

This study will contribute to the relevant literature and be a guide to understand the implementation aspects of establishing a tele-mental health intervention to improve the mental health of women during the antepartum and postpartum period in Bangladesh. Besides, this pilot study will also help to tailor a tele-mental health programme in the routine healthcare system in Bangladesh where in-person mental health support is not possible. The aim of this study is to improve the mental wellbeing of women during antenatal and postnatal period by increasing awareness and access to mental healthcare. This will be an implementation research among women who are at antepartum or postpartum period visiting outpatient units in Dinajpur District Hospital will be included in this study. This study will be conducted in Dinajpur District Hospital, Bangladesh. Implementation process includes: development of an awareness raising materials; development of a tele-mental health registration and appointment platform; creating pool of psychologist; establishing a well-being corner.
